As 2024 unfolds, the Solarflare team are eager to explore the transformative era in experiential design, driven by the rapid advancements in real-time AI.

Current State of Play

Our journey in technology has been marked by significant strides, particularly in the realm of high-quality image generation. Tools like Stable Diffusion, Runway, Midjourney, and DALL-E have broadened the creative horizon. Traditionally, these tools cater to offline processes, requiring significant rendering time. In exhibitions and galleries, for instance, data visualisation has become increasingly sophisticated, yet such experiences don’t tend to include the same method of prompting and then instantly generating images and videos.

The Next Step Forward IN AI

This year is set to be a turning point with the introduction of technologies like StreamDiffusion and other systems that offer advancements aiming to revolutionise the process of frame-by-frame image generation, making it more responsive and adaptive. The key here is cracking the hurdles of image generation and the latency of the content being created. We’ve got a vision of how these systems can be integrated within experiential activations, drawing users into a more engaged brand experience.

User Experience in Real-Time

Imagine an interactive space where each movement you make transforms into an artistic expression. The potential of real-time AI is boundless. It allows for altering visual narratives based on user movements, instantly changing prompts or styles. Users can even directly input prompts and styles or manipulate videos on screens by integrating sound, motion, and prompting, creating a deeply personalised interactive experience. Essentially, the audience will be able to generate in real-time a piece of art however they like – making this a perfect way for brands to push creativity and technical advancements.

Striking a Balance Between Potential and Limitations

Incorporating real-time AI into experiential design brings immense possibilities alongside significant challenges. The most notable hurdle is the processing power required for technologies like Stable Diffusion to operate in real time. Stable Diffusion, particularly in a real-time context, demands robust computing resources to minimise latency, ensuring that the generated images are not just responsive but also of high quality. The hardware requirements for such an operation typically include high-end GPUs and dedicated processing units, which might limit accessibility and scalability in certain environments. However, with the correct setup put into systems, such as live Audio-visual systems like TouchDesigner or Notch, we’ll be able to manipulate content in a number of exciting ways, enabling surfaces to be projected on with the video content that users generate or LED screens to illuminate.

Despite these challenges, the push towards real-time AI remains a key focus, promising a future where experiential design is not only interactive but also instantaneously responsive and dynamically creative.

Feel free to check out our exploration of AI’s Role in Sound and Visual Design here, which uses Stable Diffusion and TouchDesigner to create an audio-reactive visual.

Solarflare’s Vision

We’re excited to be at the helm of this revolution. Our pipelines are being adapted for both brand activations and art exhibitions, maximising the potential of advanced computer graphics and real-time processing.

The team’s trials with these technologies have been illuminating, revealing the potential of merging real-time AI with sophisticated graphics to create captivating experiences. As we continue doing so, we invite you to join us in exploring the vast potential of real-time AI in experiential design, pushing the limits of what’s possible in this vibrant and evolving field.

In an Era of AI Innovation

Our recent experiments have taken us into the exciting realm of crafting digital personas. While these digital personas are fascinating, they sometimes fall short of capturing the individual’s true essence, particularly against AI-generated backgrounds.

Consider the app EPIK, which transforms photos into yearbook-style portraits with various fun designs. Our goal, however, was more ambitious: to enable anyone to see themselves as any character they choose. We delved into different methods before finding one that really works.

Using Midjourney, we crafted both the backdrop and a lifelike figure, achieving an impressive level of realism. We focused on enhancing the authenticity through Photorealistic (GPT Plugin), paying close attention to aspects like camera lens perspective, colour schemes, and subject positioning. This streamlined the process, allowing for rapid iterations and refinements.

InsightFace AI's Role in Achieving Authenticity

To integrate personal headshots into this setup, we paired them with InsightFace AI, which is skilled at capturing facial nuances in the generated scenes. It took some trial and error, but the end results – combining personal photos with a pre-generated photorealistic image – are truly impressive.

How AI-Generated Personas Can Reshape Fan Engagement in Sports and Entertainment

This method significantly enhances the potential of digital and experiential installations, ideal for brands and clients aiming to create immersive experiences. For example, sports fans can be virtually placed in a Premier League football lineup or celebrate a Grand Slam tennis victory, creating a unique and engaging fan experience. On the other hand, movie studios could create custom movie posters, allowing fans to see themselves as part of their favourite films. It not only increases fan engagement but also adds a personal touch to promotional materials.

More than just enlivening content, this approach has wide appeal, offering an engaging and shareable experience.

If you’re excited by the potential of this technology to transform digital and experiential installations, we’d love to discuss how it can be applied to your projects.

Physical health is finally at the top of our priorities, but how are we addressing our mental state?

The pandemic has ignited a much needed global conversation about health. A new found heightened vigilance for our physical wellbeing aids in limiting the spread of the virus, but also has a detrimental effect on our social anxiety and mental wellbeing.

Limited human contact, a drastic change to habits, change in environment (working from home) and economic uncertainty has had a considerable impact on our mental health. We use the words ‘stress or stressed’ so frequently in our day-to-day diction that sometimes the signs of high stress levels are being overlooked. High stress levels can include symptoms of; depression, restlessness, feeling overwhelmed, unfocused, trouble sleeping, problems with memory and the higher the cortisol level (the hormone released when you’re stressed) the less able our brains are capable of functioning properly.

As companies transition post-lockdown into a new sense of normalcy, one thing that’s not being discussed enough is how we begin to support mental health both short and long term.

Organisations such as Asana have nap rooms for staff to rest, recharge and restore throughout the day. Google are known for their all encompassing wellness programme which includes fitness centres on site. Although wellness has been a core principle for leading businesses, the move to remote working means we need to adapt to supporting employee health remotely on a global scale.

How we're hacking the problem.

The most accessible form of health technology is mobile applications, as there are over 3.5BN global smartphone users, more than any other device.

We’ve even created a roundup of our favourite apps we’re using as a team here.

After researching further into wellness apps, our team quickly understood that the biggest challenge with the current health tech available is the fact they all assume we know what our health issues are. Most require a preliminary self-diagnosis, which presents problems in being led to the incorrect treatment, especially for anxious or hypochondriac types.

Introducing MYndScAPE.

We decided to build a proof of concept. An application that could interpret your biometric data (collected from smart devices) and visualise the information into something everyone could understand.

Visually it would present a sculptural form inspired by nature, that could change and evolve depending on your data. A dynamic sculpture that could display on your mobile, desktop, change your avatar, profile pic and even project holographically on your physical work desk.

This would allow users to view their changing state, but also allow users to share, and open up a much needed dialogue with friends and family.

mindsculpture_animation_node_screenshot

How does it work?

To create the MyndScape data visualisations we called on a range of skills in our creative Lab’s team.

Data collection was the most important – what data would we collect and why. We decided to gather raw data from a combination of accelerometer sensor readings for movement and pulse sensors for heart rate. These are captured from a user’s wearable or smartphone using a custom app.

The data is then processed and wirelessly sent to a workstation running Blender and a custom Animation Node graph. Each parameter influences the growth of a 3D sculpture model. These are uploaded to Sheepit, the crowdsourced distributed render farm which accelerates the raytracing, creating beautiful images and animated sequences. The final images are sent back to the user to enjoy or share.

Combined with meditation and yoga exercises, the app can also guide you into changing your sculpture.
Go from a stressed and anxious visual to a much less turbulent image after a session with realtime visual feedback.

Each sculpture is a unique record of your meditation session and a visual insight into your state of mind.

See some of our team’s MyndScape’s, captured over the first few weeks of lockdown below.

labs is where we get to let our ideas off the leash

As a technology agnostic studio positioned deep in innovation, the need to constantly evolve is incredibly important. If we want to continue to  deliver cutting edge experiences for our clients, we need to practice what we preach.

We cannot ask our clients to try new things if we’re not continuously testing, hacking and creating ideas for ourselves too.  It’s why we’ve decided to formally launch Solarflare Labs (SFS) a way to communicate our ideas to the world.

Our Labs are  headed up  our CTO Stuart Cupit, with over 25+ years of experience working as a creative technologist, he is the brains behind the execution of our boldest and bravest ideas. Talking about Labs, Stuart had this to say:

“Exploring new technologies and creating moving experiences is at the heart of everything we do. Labs is where we get to let our ideas off the leash, and see if they have legs. Sometimes the best way to communicate a new idea, is to create it.”.

Stuart Cupit, CTO and Co-Founder,

Solarflare Studio

how do we pick a problem to solve?

Typically we define problems or challenges we’re facing in our own lives. Whether personal or professional the question we ask ourselves often starts off with, is there a real-world issue we can hack with technology?

The wider Solarflare team meet in our virtual office, to talk freely, with no concept or brief in mind.

Often we notice trending topics and areas we all want to investigate creatively. Mental health, mindfulness and social distancing are some of the themes we’ve  explored over the past few months. The creative workshops also encourage a positive internal culture, to speak about how we’re feeling.

The Labs projects keep us inspired about why we work in this sector to begin with. It’s collaboration at it’s finest. Unrestricted, untethered to a single technology or philosophy, and fuelled by our collective imaginations.

Screenshot-2020-10-19-at-13.45.34 (1)

each lab project has 3 goals:

1. To explore the possibilities of new technology by being imaginative, trying new combinations or approaches that haven’t been tried before.
2. To discover how far we can push these innovations, how they can live in the real world and improve people’s lives
3. To build a solution (or proof of concept) that will can work today, connects the world to elevate the human experience.

the future for labs

Long term, we aim for Labs to evolve into a global innovation hub. A place we can work collaboratively on ambitious projects to tackle important and impossible issues. We’re keen to expand our external team, looking for unique  independent artists, designers and creators to give them new tools to express their ideas.

Labs will always remain as a hacking hub within Solarflare, a way for us to exercise creativity, between projects and briefs. If you’d like to get involved or have an idea you think we should bring to life get in touch here.

discover our labs work below:

our new virtual offices

At the beginning of lockdown, we realised working from home and staying on Zoom meetings all day was exhausting.

Whilst user testing some of the virtual space platforms available (see here), we decided what better way to test each platform than to build our very own virtual office. An upgraded space with bigger rooms and custom designed furniture, without the rent fees. Makes you think, we really should have thought of this earlier.

The space is interactive, engaging and frankly, more fun. It’s easy to access via desktop and a headset (for those who own one). Drinks come out every Friday!

biometric data turned into sculptures

Our latest proof of concept is an application: Myndscape. The idea started off by asking everyone on a Zoom call, the standard, polite, but generic “how are you?” after four calls with the same team, on the same day, it gets a little generic. What we realise we’re trying to do when asking someone how they are, is to connect. We want to know how people are feeling to compare, to relate, to offer support but talking about how you feel at work isn’t the most comfortable.

What we decided we needed was a visual way to represent our biometric data. A feedback mechanism that could showcase how we felt without us saying anything. Often our bodies can be stressed before our minds can catch up. Knowing what’s going on inside is key to helping us make changes, seek help, and take time out if we need it. Smart devices such as a watch or phone could pick up data such as pulse rate which would then be read by the application and rendered into a sculpture. The more turbulent the sculpture waves the more stressed you are, the more smooth the 3d render the more calm. See more on this project here.

GESTURAL CONTROLLED DISPLAYS

The need to feel connected to our environment is universal. Especially now more than ever.

Technology can help us create that feeling, by creating a sense of wonder and helping us stay present. Gestural controlled experiences aren’t just visually compelling, they remind us of something more – the importance of play.

Contactless, interactive installations have always drawn big crowds and we’re looking forward to creating more ideas that give people that “wow” feeling.

stay safe bubbles

Staying safe should be everyone’s priority right now, but trying to gauge distance in real life isn’t the easiest.

It’s why we decided to design a concept that solved the problem. Our Stay Safe bubbles are created using a camera and an AI people tracking algorithm, to anonymously find human shapes in the video image. We then calculate where they are standing in 3D and the distance between any two people, with the help of a velocity compensation algorithm to compensate for the lag between capture and display.

This determines the colour of the area we project onto the floor around them in realtime using digital projectors mounted overhead. One colour if they are socially distanced from all their neighbours (blue/green) and another if they are too close(red).  All of this happens 60 times per second giving a fluid interactive feel to the experience. The distance, colour, and visual style can all be customised. This can be installed in any space where people have the potential to come into contact with others as an interactive reminder of the importance of taking care to protect everyone during these challenging times.

NFT's?

You’ve probably seen the social media hype around NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) with the likes of Elon Musk selling his first tweet, Beeple making over $69M in NFT sales, and The Killers releasing their latest album as an NFT. But what exactly is it and what does it mean for brands? In this post, we’ll be exploring the basics and giving a few of our thoughts on how we see brands leveraging NFTs for exclusive experiences.

The Basics:

Let’s start with the basics, NFTs are a unit of currency stored on the blockchain that contains a unique digital file (this can be anything audio, video, image, or even a game, etc). NFTs allow you to encrypt ownership, so regardless of how much the asset is shared the original digital file can be officially ‘owned’.

Artists from all backgrounds have become the early adopters, unlike a normal sale of physical assets where you receive revenue in return for the object, with NFT’s you can continue to make money from every future sale. The blockchain serves as a built-in verification system where it can always be traced back to the origin which is good for brands that often are duped or replicated (Burberry, Nike etc).

It could be a game-changer, as it gives creators full control over how they create value and scarcity with pieces.

Where’s the opportunity for brands?

There are many creative possibilities for brands to leverage NFTs, defining digital pieces of value is the first step. Collectibles, memorabilia, exclusive collaborations, personalised and limited edition pieces are where brands can start as NFTs appeal to the market of collectors, consumers that want exclusivity.

In theory, brands could sell the physical item and the digital version, like a Yeezy limited edition shoe, one you can wear physically, and one your digital avatar can wear in virtual spaces.

(Image above from Beeple’s NFT collection)

How can we help?

The experience of obtaining an NFT:

Typically the process of obtaining an NFT seems to be very similar to the world of art-buyers, exclusive, high-ticket costs, and inaccessible to the mass market. However, giving away an NFT, creating hype around ‘how’ consumers can obtain an NFT could be a buzz-worthy route for brands to explore. Easter-egg hunt style, brands can take megafans on incredibly interactive, engaging, gamified routes to finding a particular asset.

Designing the space:

Whether a brand plans to sell, auction, or create a gamified experience to obtain an NFT, we can create the world the virtual assets live in. The virtual space could be anything from a gallery to a football stadium, the possibilities are endless and can be in AR, VR, hologram or any other digital form.

Delivering the experience:

Every aspect of creating a value-add needs consideration, what’s the journey you want to take audiences on? We can define the overarching narrative and help you create a buzz-worthy virtual experience.

1800x-1-1389x900

Things to consider:

There is still a lot to be defined in this space, policing and legislation are yet to be defined so brands still need to be careful. Storage of digital assets needs to be prioritized and this should be a creative process with both CISSO’s (Certified Information Systems Security Officer) and CTO’s involved.

Are NFTs here long term?
Digital creators are able to create value and track their money owed which gives it the potential to transform industries. The opportunity for how brands begin to use NFTs in meaningful ways is yet to be fully explored, but what is for certain whilst there’s a huge hype the media attention for the first brands who create something awesome is almost guaranteed.

Happy International Women’s Day! Today we’re celebrating the fierce and remarkable women who have shaped our world and continue to inspire us with their ingenuity, creativity, and sheer tenacity. But let’s not forget that achieving true gender equality requires ongoing effort and commitment – not just on this day, but every single day.

As we honour their achievements, our LAUNCH team is excited to share their latest BOOSTER project using Runway’s video-to-video development, Gen-1. This project is a small but meaningful tribute to the incredible women who continue to drive our inspiration.

THE EXPLORATION

Gen-1 is a ground-breaking software that uses machine learning to generate fresh footage from existing videos. With exclusive early access, our LAUNCH team went about testing it on some of our Shutter Lounge content to showcase the awesome skills of Imani Vital, an Aerial Straps Artist. Created in partnership with Private Drama and Wise Productions, The Shutter Lounge is an interactive virtual venue built to host and entertain when the industry had paused. Working with a wide range of cabaret artists, we captured their performances against a green screen and seamlessly transported them into beautifully designed virtual sets using Unreal Engine.

Previously submerged in a mystical forest, by using simple text prompts and images with Gen-1, we were able to create several stylised videos inspired by a variety of pattern styles. From floral and simple line patterns to art deco references they each enhance the scenes’ cinematic creativity and quickly transform the visuals of the high-skill contemporary circus performer, Imani.

One of the major advantages of using Gen-1 is that it streamlines the video editing process. Traditionally, video production involves hours of footage, which must be carefully edited and pieced together. With Gen-1, you can generate new footage from simple input to visualise ideas, saving time and reducing the need for extensive shoots. Another advantage is that it can very quickly enhance deeper cinematic expression. Allowing creators to explore a variety of creative avenues at ideation stage and, as a result, tell more compelling stories.

We found the AI worked really well with juxtaposing content, where dark backgrounds complement the lighter areas. But of course, like any new technology, there are drawbacks. Similar to Midjourney’s first iterations, the morphing of close-up faces is a tad insane. No doubt, with developments and wider industry rollout, other concerns will arise instead, like overuse, leading to a loss of authenticity and creativity. However, we believe that by using it selectively and in conjunction with other video production techniques, you can avoid this pitfall and create truly unique and impactful videos.

STORYTELLING TRANSFORMED

As video production evolves, new technologies are constantly emerging to enhance the creative process. Runway’s Gen-1 Video-Video development is a prime example of how machine learning has the potential to transform the way we approach storytelling.

At LAUNCH, we’re always on the lookout to collaborate, test and incorporate new technologies like Gen-1 into our projects. We’re excited to continue exploring new ways to tell stories and push the boundaries of what’s possible in our narrative development. The team is thrilled to be a part of this exciting time and with the striking results. A big shout out to the remarkable acrobatics skills of Imani Vital, whose performance centres these AI generated animations.

Thank you to all of the women out there y’all are really something else. The studio is committed to supporting and uplifting women in all areas of life and work. So let’s keep pushing for progress. Let’s challenge the status quo, smash those glass ceilings, and continue working towards a society with a brighter, more equal future.
