‘We believe that creativity and technology can change the world for the better, and LAUNCH gives us a vessel in which we can explore our ideas with total freedom.’

– Helen Bellringer, Creative Director,

Solarflare Studio

We’re proud to announce the take-off of our creative accelerator programme, LAUNCH; a blend of R&D, innovation, and collaboration. Designed to bring together the studio’s tech natives and forward-thinking network, LAUNCH is a space where they can experiment, unleash ideas, and bring new technological solutions to life.

“The team is thrilled to announce this news,” said Helen Bellringer, Creative Director of Solarflare Studio. “We’ve created distinct formats for LAUNCH that give us a framework for a fast, iterative approach to prototyping. This disciplined way of working makes our ideas tangible and more likely to blossom into fruition.” They continue: “At Solarflare, we believe that creativity and technology can change the world for the better, and LAUNCH gives us a vessel in which we can explore our ideas with total freedom. Inviting creatives to collaborate expands our horizons and diversifies our ways of thinking, meaning we’re not stuck in an echo chamber of our own talents.”

The World's First Mixed Reality Masquerade

An example of the new programme in action is the World’s First Mixed Reality Masquerade – AR Masked Ball.

In collaboration with artist Charlotte Dillon from Head of House Designs, the LAUNCH team took a futuristic glimpse into wearable holographic fashion, merging tradition with augmented reality in their latest project.

Using Dillon’s Tilt Brush designs, they created a custom-built AR application using the latest smart glasses. The multi-user experience allows guests to see each other’s bespoke masks and their own, tracked in real-time in the digital space.

Artist Charlotte Dillon from HoH Design expresses, “Seeing others in equally fantastical headpieces will transport the wearer into a playground, a bit like the classic masquerade – but the question is – how does it affect how you feel, move and interact with the world around you?

15+ years’ experience of masks has taught HoH that it doesn’t take long for the mask to take over. Wearers are often impacted by the stereotypical characteristics of a creature – naughty fox, show-off peacock. But by distorting these characters into a futuristic world, what effect does it have on the wearer?”

“Using the latest technology, you can wear a pair of glasses and see essential holograms floating in front of you. The idea was to take these holograms and design virtual masks which people could then wear as they moved around in the shared space.” Chief Technology Officer Stuart Cupit from Solarflare Studio explained. “This LAUNCH project is ready to roll out at events and corporate parties. If you want to push your traditional masked ball into the digital realm, get in touch!”

FIVE DISTINCT formats

Our journey of innovation and growth is more than a mechanism to inform clients and the wider community of the latest emerging technology. It follows five core exploration formats to facilitate collaboration and to push the boundaries of what’s possible:

IGNITE
For reactive and topical experimentations that showcase existing tech with a dynamic twist. The goal of ‘IGNITE’ is to engage audiences with our unique use cases of the technology and for the team to have some fun hacking it.

ENGAGE
With so many innovative artists the team admires, this format is where we invite fresh artistic and technical talent who use cutting-edge tech on board to expand our network. Be it for key events, holidays or seasons, this curated collaboration is where we commission visually stunning and thought-provoking work to share with the industry.

BOOSTER
‘BOOSTER’ keeps us ahead of the latest tech advancements, exploring both new hardware and software with partnering brands. As we test their new discoveries and offer our exclusive expertise, it creates a mutually beneficial PR opportunity and relationship.

MISSION
‘MISSION’ sits as our internal explorative journey of discovery to push the boundaries of what technology can do. As we seek to find a new way of doing something, be it exploring new hardware or software, our creative and technical teams collaborate to offer unique experiences that captivate our audience. By challenging conventional ideas, we produce solutions that inspire people to be a part of.

FUSION
Fusing the technical talents of the company with external artists, this collaborative project provides a platform for artists to explore the latest innovative mediums, and the AR Masked Ball project is a key example of ‘FUSION’ in action. As an opportunity to explore higher thinking and reach a new audience, this fusion of technology and art imagines completely unique experiences with artists showcasing their work through new avenues of artistic expression.

2020: The year we reinvent how we're living and communicating with others.

The current pandemic has forced entire industries to re-evaluate how they operate. Everyone, regardless of industry, has been fast-tracked into adopting technology at a rate we’ve never seen before.
We need to adapt quickly, leveraging new technology is a survival strategy now.

Virtual conferencing (VC) is a fairly new way of working for the masses. It’s mostly associated with a common Zoom-Esque meeting style – but there are far more options available than just seeing your colleague’s faces on a grid every Monday morning.
We’re exploring something new and immersive: virtual spaces. They’re engaging, interactive and at a loss for a better phrase – pretty cool.

Brands and agencies are now seeing how virtual spaces aren’t just a fad for events, something to dismiss, but a vital tool in creating meaningful experiences.

It’s getting exciting!

VRPeople_01

What are virtual spaces?

Simply, the most immersive way to communicate virtually.

Technically it’s a 3D environment you step into, as an avatar via headsets or through a desktop. It’s designed to keep you engaged (well the good ones are). These Hubs act like a virtual intranet, accessible and scalable. The flexibility is what’s most exciting, it can be used to host virtual events, demonstrate new digital products or even house interactive content internally.

Hesitations?

The main hesitation with brands not exploring this space, is simply not knowing where to begin.

Preliminary questions remain unanswered:
 – How tech savvy does our audience need to be?
 – Is this exclusive for Millennials and Gen Z?
 – Do we all need headsets to experience this?
 – How do we use it?
 – Do we need it?

Engagements

If engagement is the goal, then you need to explore VC options.

Firstly, no solution available fits all scenarios. There is a HUGE difference with hosting a one-off live event for 100 people, a virtual product launch or creating your very own immersive real-estate.

At the risk of sounding cliche ‘anything is possible’, it’s about what your end objective is and then choosing the right platform to deliver.

We’re getting calls for a lot of different types of experiences and kick-starters, a few of those examples include:

Conferences, Webinars & Panel Discussions:

  • Keynote presentations

  • Live, Interactive Q&A with audience

  • Meet & Greet spaces for networking

Product Demonstrations:

  • Tactile features that allow viewers to see products up close, from multiple angles.

  • ‘Try on’ clothes on your VR avatar

  • E-commerce opportunities

Live Performance Events

  • Live music & spoken word performances

  • Real-time avatar performances

  • Social interaction and community building

The ways in which VC can be leveraged both for internal communication and external are endless.

The flexibility to design custom spaces with high levels of interaction, using gamification elements means this will most likely be the future of learning too.

What Next?

Determining whether this is a creative route you should explore as a brand, and what platform to be exploring with is a minefield.

It’s why we’re taking you through best practices and the pro’s and con’s of each platform via video on Thursday 18th June.

a roundup on the apps we're using to stay physically and emotionally healthy.

8th September 2020

apps-02-qbwvaytgiatloizv3dluniq4an5k0h7ro3rinsr40o

Our mission as a studio is to explore how technology can enhance the human experience.

Reports show that over 69% of people are feeling somewhat to very worried about the effects Covid-19 is having on their mental health, with lead contributors being worried about the future (63%), feeling stressed and/or anxious (56%) and unsurprisingly 49% of people reported feeling  bored.

We know we need just the right balance of spontaneity and security to feel  energised  but how do we tangibly create that?
Whilst creating a proof of concept for the Wellness sector (which we’ll be revealing next week) we decided to sit down, and round up the apps we’re using internally to stay emotionally and physically healthy.

We’re all a work in progress and these apps are helping us manage our day-to-day’s, they help us set trackable goals and quite simply supporting us feeling a little more clearer.

Headspace

Insta-05-1-qbwvaytgiatloizv3dluniq4an5k0h7ro3rinsr40o

With over 40M+ downloads, Headspace is one of most popular wellness apps out in the market. The simple to use UX and minimal illustration style makes this app accessible to a multi-generational audience.

Applications like these are daily tools with companies like Google, LinkedIn, GE, Adobe, Genentech and Unilever, who are offering HeadSpace to employees as a health and wellness benefit. As companies understand the health of their employees not only affects absence, productivity and revenue but every aspect of creativity.

Stress is not something that will ever disappear, there will be constant fluctuation in our human experience but what can be done is management and this tool is a great way to start.

It covers topics on how to manage anxiety, anger, relaxation before bed and is a healthy addictive app to have on your mobile.

Mend

Relationships ending isn’t something we all talk about at work, even around friends expressing how you feel can be hard.

Mend claims that their expert training will help you feel better 58% faster and after testing it out, we’re not surprised. Designed in a chat app way, with a compassionate AI feels like your conversing with an old friend (You can kind of see how the Spike Jonze film Her isn’t so far fetched).

The app helps you log how you feel, allows you to talk openly and offers advice/ideas on how to change your emotional state instantly.  It’s the type of non-judgemental expertise we can all do with when going through a breakup, relationship change or just generally feeling a little isolated.

Logging behaviour, like last contact with ex, or self-care activities may seem a little odd at first but reflecting on you habits can really make you more self-aware.

We recommend this to anyone going through a difficult time.

Talkspace

Insta-04-qbwvaxvmbgsbcx188v7830ynp9a6ss41bz416isi6w

One we should all be sharing in our networks. You never know what’s going on with people, having access and normalising the use of therapy apps can really help others too.

Therapy should be accessible for everyone, the stigma of needing support should be removed too, it’s not about being unhealthy or unwell, therapy is a sign of someone taking their health as a priority.

This app allows you to have a sounding board, a place to document your thoughts, with responses from professions, access to help and support.

Costs are lower than your traditional therapy and again the ease of access makes it less scary than walking into an office.

Try it out.

Forest

The application we all need, but don’t admit to needing.
Distractions are at an all time high especially now when we’re at home, our phones are pinging off and staying focused seems like a skill we should have learnt.

It’s hard, but the Forest app is a nice and simple one, use it to keep on track for a task the tree begins to grow when you’re using focused on a task and if you deviate off it the plant dies.

It helps you log activity in a fun way, growing a lush forest is the goal and helps you keep aware of how many distractions you do have.

We use this on a daily, combined with blocking our calendar out it keeps us on track even with the little things, like downtime and self-care activities.

In 2020, staying present is a skill we all need to develop.

7 Minute Fitness

Insta-03-qbwvawxs4mr11b2lecslij773vetl30azugjp8twd4

Lockdown, being at home all the time and gyms being closed hasn’t been the best for us keeping in shape.

We love routines, a plan, things to do but working out at home has felt a bit odd. One thing we found helps, is to take small steps into your goals.

A small start, just 7 minutes which means it’s easy enough to jump out of bed to do, try in your lunch break or even between calls. The routine is simple, but effective and habit forming. Even for the busiest and sometimes more lazier parts of ourselves this one is a great one to challenge us – you’ll be surprised.

No more excuses. Let us know what you think.

Our cto stuart reviews the quest 2 spec, and imagines up the ultimate vr headset.

Today's the day.

The Quest 2 VR headset’s official release announcement is today, with leaked images and videos going live earlier this week –  it’s recieving the PR hype we expected. We decided to take a look at the headset, to see what’s included in this iteration and more importantly, what’s not.

We all know the original Quest isn’t the best performing VR headset available, but with Facebook behind them they are certainly one of the most well known brands. That being said, it’s also been our VR headset of choice since its release 18 months ago. It’s standalone and wire-free form, combined with inside out tracking made it super simple to use, it tempted us away from standard PC connected headsets.

What are the new features?

  • A faster Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor

  • 50% Higher resolution (Almost 4k display)

  • More memory (from 128gb up to 256gb)

  • More ergonomic design (it’s lighter, smaller, and the strap is softer)

  • 3D positional audio (not necessarily new, but we hear improvements have been made)While these are all worthy iterative improvements that’s all they are, there’s nothing particularly new here. Still, these are probably enough to keep the Quest on its top spot, just in time as the Pico Neo eyes 2 announced last month was snapping at its heels for pole position.

What does our Ideal vr headset + kit look like:

There’s still plenty of scope for improvement in VR headset technology, it’s getting excited though.

No hardware brand has harnessed all the technology partners currently available and collaborated to build something incredible. We thought we’d have a go at spec-ing out our ULTIMATE VR headset, including all the innovations usually only found in individual devices, many of which we have used in our projects over the years.

Design-wise, the lightness and better weight balance like the new Quest 2

Hygiene is key, interchangeable and washable VR covers would be the perfect accessory

Finger tracking controllers and 144hz refresh rate like the Valve Index

Wireless, low latency streaming from DisplayLink

Eye-tracking and foveated rendering like the Pico Neo 2 eye

8k resolution and 200 degrees field of view like the PImax 8k Plus

Automatic IPD adjustment like the XTAL

Virtual smell from Feelreal

Virtual temperature from TEGway

Biometric EEG sensing from MyndPlay or Neurable

Variable focus like the Facebook Half Dome prototypes

And while we are at it why not bundle it with the ultimate peripherals

The omnidirectional treadmill from Infinadec so you can walk naturally wherever you fancy

A haptic feedback suit from Teslasuit to feel your virtual world

A decent RTX3090 powered workstation PC

The above list is forever growing and the above setup might still be a long way off. To create at a headset at a commercially accessible price point for the mass market with all the bells and whistles will take time. The exciting thing is that VR experiences can be designed with all senses being stimulated, for a truly immersive environment.

We’re always testing out new technologies, with our Studio in London packed with kit to play with. If you’d like to book a meeting to try some of our tech, either physically or virtually, get in touch.

new technology excites us.

If you’ve been following us, you’ll know we’re testing out hardware from home, weighing up the pros, cons and best uses.

3D screens have been around for a while now, each with varying in commercial success. We’ve been curious to see who’ll create “the screen” that changes the game for everyone. The exciting news is, it might just be here.

Dimenco kindly sent us their Simulated Reality (SR) 3D screen to test out.  Unlike other iterations of 3D screens, it requires no glasses, no additional accessories, and is the perfect solution for a contactless experience.

By turning worlds, event launches, and applications — digital, the team has successfully intersected the latest frontier technologies in a variety of sectors. Through nothing but collaboration, we’ve tested, built, and delivered bespoke experiences that stand out in a world of over-saturated content, all while educating our clients along the way.

first impressions of the “world’s most advanced 3d display technology”.

The system comes complete, including a powerful workstation, hand tracking, spatial audio and of course the 32” 8k auto stereoscopic display. It’s pretty impressive. The 3D is created by a lenticular lens over the screen, this directs light from specific pixels to your left and right eyes allowing them to see slightly different images.

First impressions are great, sitting in front of the screen the content just leaps out. The built-in eye-tracking perfectly positions the 3D for the user and allows you to ‘look around’ the content by leaning slightly left and right. The sensation is stunningly realistic and natural. The attention-grabbing nature of 3D screens is a great draw. We’re fascinated by the way the images float out of the screen, which will most likely increase dwell times and engagement with the viewer.

The only limitation is that only one person can really view the 3D imagery at a time, which can also be seen as an advantage for personalised , or technical content.

The SR screen works well for any content that benefits from being viewed in 3D. Complex engineering, architecture, medical, etc. It makes a great point of sale experience for showcasing products, especially if they benefit from interactivity in some way like product customisation. Real world uses for customised clothing, footwear, interior decor, car options would all benefit the consumer experience, showcasing an end product in a more tangible, sharp 3D form.

One nice feature, especially in these times, is the screen can be enjoyed completely hands-free, unlike VR and AR headsets which have hygiene issues because they need to be worn.

Dimenco is looking to build the SR technology into a range of screens from laptops to mobiles, for now, there’s the opportunity to create standout first of their kind experiences using the 32” SR screen. We are looking forward to incorporating this into our projects in the near future.

‘We are placing the audience in a vulnerable position. They should be rewarded with A virtual experience that moves, entertains, or inspires them.’

– Rachel Barrie, Junior Creative Technologist,

Solarflare Studio

This year at BFI London Film Festival Expanded, our Creative Director (Helen Bellringer) and Junior Creative Technologist (Rachel Barrie) returned to 26 Leake Street to experience the immersive art selected for the showcase. Overall, the quality of the experiences was higher than the previous year; but as they wandered around slipping headsets on and off, they couldn’t help but ask themselves: is this truly the industry standard?

THE INTERACTIVITY

Midway through our 90-minute slot, we found ourselves placing the HTC Vive Flow over our eyes for Wu Tsang’s jump into the VR medium – a visual exploration of the ocean. After a few minutes of watching fish float around we became confused – was that it? Personally, all I saw were a few variations of a flocking simulation. It became clear that the collection selected for this year’s BFI Expanded was mostly a series of directors, filmmakers, and creatives that were dabbling in the field of VR rather than those whose bread and butter it is. We placed headset on after headset to simply have a film or story presented to us as though it was on a screen, the only difference being it was 360 degrees. Interactivity was at a minimum.

If we are asking people to place a full VR headset on with headphones, blocking out the outside world and getting them to surrender their senses to us – we should make it worth it. We are placing the audience in a vulnerable position, and they should be rewarded with an experience that moves, entertains, or inspires them.

OUR RECOMMENDATION

The best piece we would recommend trying before the exhibition closes on Sunday (23.10.22) is ‘Missing Pictures Episode 3: The Monkey Wrench Gang’. The short VR piece tells the story of a film that never came to be whilst touching on the process of developing a film in Hollywood and the roadblocks female directors face in the industry. The dynamic use of the full 360 degrees, in combination with the contrast of animation and volumetric capture, told an intricate and exciting story in an engaging manner.

To get people excited about VR experiences and to keep them in the moment without making them want to rip off the headset, there needs to be more consideration of how to use the medium to its full potential. VR films and experiences really should not run for longer than 15 minutes. It is exhausting and overwhelming to spend a long time in VR. Additionally, a lot of headsets, like the Quest 2 and the HTC Vive, get extremely hot to wear after a prolonged period. The first headset I placed over my head at the exhibition left me dripping with sweat at the end of the 11-minute piece.

IS THAT THE TIME?

Immersive shouldn’t mean a passive experience, it should be engaging and interactable. It should give feedback to your senses. You shouldn’t feel time pass, and you should forget about the world around you. If it hasn’t achieved that, then it has failed.

It is exciting and promising to see large collections of immersive work go on display at places like BFI, however, if this is considered the crème de la crème, then we have a long way to go.

‘What a wonderful world we live in, where technology means you can infinitely customise and play with the way you look and the way the world perceives you.’

– Rachel Barrie, Junior Creative Technologist,

Solarflare Studio

For this year’s Breast Cancer Now’s Wear it Pink day on 21 October, the studio decided to get creative with how we use technology for good, styling all pink augmented reality outfits.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

Each year in the UK, there are around 55,000 new cases of breast cancer in women. The breast cancer survival rate has doubled in the last 40 years, but it is only as a result of raising money for the research through events and fundraisers like these.

Breast Cancer Now‘s Wear it Pink day is one of the biggest fundraising events in the UK. Taking place on 21 October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, thousands of amazing people will wear it pink in their communities, schools, or workplaces, to help make life-changing research and care happen. Over the past year, people have been diagnosed with the disease at a time when everything from treatment to screenings have been disrupted.

ALL PINK DRESSX GARMENTS

For our fundraising event, instead of wearing physical pink clothing to the office, we thought this would be a great opportunity to try out some AR fashion and raise awareness towards such an important cause. Using the DressX app we tried on some of their pink AR garments and experimented with how well they tracked to our bodies. DressX is an app that allows creatives to post their digital fashion garments for people to try and purchase. You can either buy a subscription to the app which allows you to do a virtual try-on and post to social media, or you can buy the garments as NFTs.

AR FASHION

We did notice that there wasn’t a large variety of traditional menswear – does AR fashion have a gender problem? There were no gendered sections on the app, perhaps making the gender of the clothing ambiguous was the aim – alas, these are thoughts for a blog post another day. Today we want to purely focus on the technology. The digital quality of the garments varied, and we found that the garments with the most amount of detailing actually looked the best and tracked to the body most seamlessly, whereas the simple pink T-shirt glitched the most. Perhaps with such simplicity error is easily noticeable. One other recurrent glitch was the way hands were integrated into the garment movement – especially if there were sleeves, the app would sometimes fail to identify which part of the garment was supposed to be on top of the other.

Accessibility of digital fashion has come a long way in the last few years, with applications like DressX and The Fabricant becoming widely used within the creative tech industry. However, with paywalls in place for the key software used to create these digital garments, such as Clo3D and Marvelous Designer, there is a barrier for the average tech and fashion enthusiast to get involved. With this component of interactivity and collaboration absent, the digital generation that grew up customising their avatars in games is missing. We believe for digital fashion to really take off, creative control needs to be given to the audience so that they can feel connected and a part of the magic.

FUNDRAISING

The studio donated on behalf of each team member who rocked an AR outfit, be it pink T-shirt or dragon cape. We hope you will join us and donate to the Breast Cancer Now organisation so that vital research and support can continue to those that need it most. You can find the link to our Just Giving page below. If you want to do things differently, drop us a message!

Happy International Women’s Day! Today we’re celebrating the fierce and remarkable women who have shaped our world and continue to inspire us with their ingenuity, creativity, and sheer tenacity. But let’s not forget that achieving true gender equality requires ongoing effort and commitment – not just on this day, but every single day.

As we honour their achievements, our LAUNCH team is excited to share their latest BOOSTER project using Runway’s video-to-video development, Gen-1. This project is a small but meaningful tribute to the incredible women who continue to drive our inspiration.

THE EXPLORATION

Gen-1 is a ground-breaking software that uses machine learning to generate fresh footage from existing videos. With exclusive early access, our LAUNCH team went about testing it on some of our Shutter Lounge content to showcase the awesome skills of Imani Vital, an Aerial Straps Artist. Created in partnership with Private Drama and Wise Productions, The Shutter Lounge is an interactive virtual venue built to host and entertain when the industry had paused. Working with a wide range of cabaret artists, we captured their performances against a green screen and seamlessly transported them into beautifully designed virtual sets using Unreal Engine.

Previously submerged in a mystical forest, by using simple text prompts and images with Gen-1, we were able to create several stylised videos inspired by a variety of pattern styles. From floral and simple line patterns to art deco references they each enhance the scenes’ cinematic creativity and quickly transform the visuals of the high-skill contemporary circus performer, Imani.

One of the major advantages of using Gen-1 is that it streamlines the video editing process. Traditionally, video production involves hours of footage, which must be carefully edited and pieced together. With Gen-1, you can generate new footage from simple input to visualise ideas, saving time and reducing the need for extensive shoots. Another advantage is that it can very quickly enhance deeper cinematic expression. Allowing creators to explore a variety of creative avenues at ideation stage and, as a result, tell more compelling stories.

We found the AI worked really well with juxtaposing content, where dark backgrounds complement the lighter areas. But of course, like any new technology, there are drawbacks. Similar to Midjourney’s first iterations, the morphing of close-up faces is a tad insane. No doubt, with developments and wider industry rollout, other concerns will arise instead, like overuse, leading to a loss of authenticity and creativity. However, we believe that by using it selectively and in conjunction with other video production techniques, you can avoid this pitfall and create truly unique and impactful videos.

STORYTELLING TRANSFORMED

As video production evolves, new technologies are constantly emerging to enhance the creative process. Runway’s Gen-1 Video-Video development is a prime example of how machine learning has the potential to transform the way we approach storytelling.

At LAUNCH, we’re always on the lookout to collaborate, test and incorporate new technologies like Gen-1 into our projects. We’re excited to continue exploring new ways to tell stories and push the boundaries of what’s possible in our narrative development. The team is thrilled to be a part of this exciting time and with the striking results. A big shout out to the remarkable acrobatics skills of Imani Vital, whose performance centres these AI generated animations.

Thank you to all of the women out there y’all are really something else. The studio is committed to supporting and uplifting women in all areas of life and work. So let’s keep pushing for progress.
