Look Up
Flight Rad AR is an Apple Vision Pro concept by Technical Art Director Lee Spooner. The idea is immediate and clear: point your Vision Pro at the sky and see every plane above you identified in real time, overlaid directly onto your view of the actual sky. Flight path, destination, altitude, registration: everything that FlightRadar24 knows about the aircraft above your location appears spatially positioned on the live aircraft as it moves through your field of view. The concept was built to explore what Apple Vision Pro's spatial computing capabilities make possible for a category of AR experience that only works when the display is transparent and positionally accurate.
Spatial Accuracy on a Moving Target
The technical challenge in a sky-based AR overlay is positional accuracy across long distances and fast-moving targets. A plane at 35,000 feet moves quickly relative to a ground-based observer, and the AR label has to track it consistently rather than drifting or snapping. Lee built the positioning system using FlightRadar24's live data feed combined with the Vision Pro's sensor array to calculate the correct angular position of each aircraft relative to the headset in real time. The label rendering was designed to scale readably across the full range of aircraft distances and to handle crowded airspace over a hub city without the overlay becoming illegible.
