Real-Time Visuals
refrAIme, our real-time AI mirror platform, exhibited at the Out of Office Art Show, London. Every visitor becomes the subject of a live AI-generated artwork.
Every visitor becomes the work
refrAIme is our real-time AI mirror platform. At the Out of Office Art Show in London we installed it as a standalone artwork, open to the public, with no brief from a client. Just the piece and whoever stepped in front of it.The concept is direct: you stand in front of the camera and the system generates an original AI artwork of you, live, as you move. The work updates frame by frame so the piece never shows you the same thing twice. Visitors who stood still got one kind of image. Visitors who moved through the space got another. The artwork is produced by the encounter, not prepared in advance.
The platform behind the piece
refrAIme is built on StreamDiffusion running through a bespoke TouchDesigner pipeline that we developed across the Epsilon carnival mirror project and refined specifically for gallery-quality output. The difference between an event activation and an art show installation is resolution and dwell time. Event visitors spend 30 seconds. Art show visitors spend three minutes. The system has to hold up to sustained attention. We calibrated the diffusion parameters specifically for the Out of Office show environment: longer dwell, slower drift, higher visual fidelity. The output printed well, which mattered because several visitors asked for prints.
Real-time AI as exhibition work
The Out of Office Art Show draws an audience that knows contemporary art and is sceptical of technology being dressed up as something it is not. We did not enter this show as a tech company showing off. We entered as a studio with an artwork to exhibit, and the technology had to justify itself through the quality of what it produced. The audience response was strong, and more usefully, the conversations it generated were serious ones about authorship, representation and what AI image generation does to the idea of portraiture. Those are the right conversations for this kind of work to prompt. refrAIme continues to develop as a platform and the Out of Office show was the clearest version of it we have exhibited in a pure art context.
